The Importance of Paid Work Experience Before Graduate School

Posted on July 27, 2016 at 6:51am 3 Comments

Last week I had the privilege of leading life-career workshops for almost 300 Health Career Connection (HCC) Interns in Oakland, Boston and Washington DC.  One of the most popular discussion topics was the question “How important is it to have paid work experience prior to applying for graduate school?” I was struck by the large number of students who felt the need to go to graduate school without gaining sufficient post-undergraduate experience. More surprising was that over 50% were…

Dear Jeff,

Thank you for your words of inspiration! I’m grateful for your commitment to advancing students in health careers-your blog is a great source of nourishment to our passion for the work we each want do to in the world. I can’t thank you enough for helping me get on track and facilitating the next steps by setting a framework that I can work with and know that moving forward- I’m taking each step with purpose. Our faith and courage sometimes gets down, but a gentle reminder of what we are capable is always a blessing, thank you for that! I am happily chanting "si se puede" and I believe I will be successful in completing the goal I have set for myself.

Dear Jeff,

It was wonderful to meet you and Angela, too. Thank you for your kind words and for connecting me to this great resource--I can't wait to peruse the blog posts and I know the career information and job search sections will come in handy as I develop a graduate school and career plan for the next few years. Great to see so many fellow undergraduates advocating for their interests and helping each other out. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Dear Jeff,

Thank you for all your support. I enjoyed the leadership workshop on Saturday and have been analyzing the different leadership styles I see at my workplace this week.

I look forward to seeing you again in a few weeks.

Hi Jeff,

At the Northern California workshop last week, you mentioned an internship working with Covered California. I was hoping you could provide me with more information regarding that internship.
