“Faith is taking the first step, even when you don’t see the whole staircase.”
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Happy New Year and Happy MLK Day! I hope that your 2012 is off to a great start! On this special day I am excited to launch my new blog and to finally move forward again on My Health Career. After much consideration, I am confident that developing My Health Career (MHC) is part of my own authentic health career direction and am recommitted to making it a reality. After launching MHC in late October, getting you to join and holding our first workshops (North Carolina and Boston), I apologize for not doing more to engage and support you. I had to attend to many year-end obligations for my roles at UC Berkeley, Health Career Connection and The California Health Workforce Alliance. I also prioritized living according to my values by spending ample quality time with my family over the holidays.
Over the holidays I spent many hours evaluating my commitments and time to be sure that MHC is part of my path and that I can deliver. I also had to confront my fears of failure and my discomfort from not knowing how to do things like blogs, Facebook and a Ning and not yet “seeing the whole staircase”. I am taking the first step now as I believe that my purpose is to help people discover and realize their potential and that although I am blessed to already do this in many ways, I want to increase my impact and follow my dream of developing MHC. It is also a way for me to share the many lessons and insights that have been of been of value to me, like the courage and wisdom of Dr. King, and to learn more through the process. I want to create a community and resources that help all of us live our dreams and ultimately make the difference we want in health and our communities. For those of you who are HCC Alums, it is a way for me to continue supporting you, learning from you and following your successes.
So I am taking my first step in advancing toward my dream of making My Health Career a reality and supporting you to achieve your dreams by writing my first blog entry ever! I have faith that you will provide me with feedback on how the blog and MHC can be most useful, interesting and practical. I started today as part of my practice of having this be a “day on” to do things in honor of Dr. King and aligned with his dreams. In addition to my blog and other things to advance MHC, I also worked on Health Career Connection, the non-profit I run to help prepare the next generation of diverse health leaders. What did you do today to honor Dr. King’s Dream and Live the Reality? What are the first steps that you can take with faith to begin letting your light shine, make your dreams a reality and help us all live the reality of Dr. Kings dream?
“As we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” Marianne Williamson
