Hot Health Careers: Which is best for you?

Implementation of Health Reform along with the aging of our population will significantly increase the demand for health leaders and professionals. The challenge is that shortages and mal-distribution already exist in many key health professions and tidal waves of retirements are on the horizon from our current aging workforce. This "Perfect Health Workforce Storm" creates serious concerns about who will take care of us but is a major opportunity for you.  You could not be pursuing health careers at a better time! The questions are, which of the hot, emerging health careers is best for you now and in the long run?

As you know, this may not be an easy answer. However, a good place to start is to get exposure to the emerging possibilities and assess which best suit your talents, passions and dreams. One of my priorities has been working with the State of California and coaltions of health employers, educators and advocates to develop plans to meet CA's future health workforce needs. Today I have a meeting in which we will be reviewing recommendations for some of the professions identified as most critical to ensuring health access, quality and outcomes. These include:

  • Primary Care Physicians
  • Primary Care and Advanced Practice Nurses
  • Physician Assistants
  • Public Health Professionals (health educators, environmental health, health administration etc)
  • Clinical Lab Scientists
  • Social Workers (including mental health)
  • Medical Assistants
  • Promotores/Community Health Workers
  • Alcohol and Other Drug Counselors
  • Direct Care Workers

Other "hot" emerging careers include Health IT, Medical Imaging, Care Coordinators, Oral Health, Mental Health and Pharmacists. Health Adminstration, listed as part of public health, is a major growth area with opportunities in hospitals, health centers, medical groups, elder care, health departments, health plans, biotech,  pharma and devices and more. A key role for health adminstrators and clinical professionals will be how to develop new models of delvering services, like "medical homes", that more fully utilize interdisciplinary teams of professionals to provide better and more affordable care.

I am confident that among all these excting options there is a rewarding health career that suits you. Start now to explore what they offer, what a day in the life is like, what impact you would have and how to best get there. More later on how to do this. My Health Career is here to support you to choose and successfully pursue the career that best suits you. Stay tuned for webinars in March to health you choose among these health careers and develop your job search strategies and our April San Diego workshop.
