How to End a Summer Internship on the Right Note

With school almost about to start, many of you are winding down in your internships. This is the perfect time to make a lasting impression so that when it comes time to apply for a job or graduate school, your supervisor will remember you. Here are seven tips for ending your internship on the right note:

***

1. Schedule a Meeting With Your Supervisor

If your supervisor has not asked you to meet, take initiative and ask him or her for an informal sit-down about your internship experience. This is a good time to express gratitude for your internship experience and have your supervisor remember you when it comes time for application season. This may also be a good time to get any last minute constructive feedback that can help you on your journey.

2.  Ask About Future Opportunities At The Company

It does not hurt to ask!

3. Give a Thank You Card

Sending a thank you card may be old-school, but it shows how much you appreciated the experience and will definitely set you apart from interns who don’t send one. A nice gift also is nice!

4. Tie Up Loose Ends

You might be working on a project that will go on after you leave. It’s a good idea to fill someone in on how to continue the work going forward or leave instructions for the next intern to continue. If you created new accounts online while working, be sure to leave the username and password for the next person to take on. Always be courteous!

5. Update Your Resume

Before you start school and you get bombarded with syllabuses and homework, update your resume while your internship is still fresh in your mind. Include details and quantifiable results that will catch the eye of employers.

6. Have Lunch With Someone New

With your internship ending, this is the time to network with someone within the company you have not spoken with before. Invite someone you never got to speak with to coffee and talk about your career plans. Be mindful to listen more than you speak.

7.  Ask For a Recommendation Letter

Is it alright to ask for a recommendation letter before applying to a job or graduate school? Yes! While you are still fresh in you're supervisor’s mind, ask him or her for a great recommendation letter.

8. Connect on LinkedIn

LinkedIn is a powerful tool because it helps foster relationships, which can help you when trying to land a job. Keep your LinkedIn up-to-date so that you give a good impression to future employers. Use LinkedIn to check up on your past colleagues and supervisors so that they keep you in mind if a new opportunity arises.
