As an AmeriCorps VISTA member, you will enhance the capacity of local networks to respond to the opioid crisis by joining 1 of 32 California coalitions, implementing intervention strategies known to reduce opioid addiction and overdose deaths: addressing supply (safe prescribing), promoting recovery (ensuring access to treatment) and preventing overdose (harm reduction including naloxone distribution). You will learn best-practices as you address the epidemic locally, and you and your coalition will benefit from the skills, tools and practices that will be shared through a program supporting all 32 coalitions in this network, called the coalition accelerator program. Although these 32 coalitions occur in counties throughout California, most placements are likely to be located in Northern California or the Central Valley. If you are already located in an affected area, or in an area with an active coalition, you might have the opportunity to serve your own community. Up to forty AmeriCorps VISTA members will learn about Public Health strategies and practices, and how coalitions can be leveraged to fight health crises. You will contribute to the goals of the coalition accelerator program through activities like these that will be based on local needs and volunteer skills: Conduct an environmental scan of community context and need; Expand community knowledge that supports the program effort; Strengthen partnerships and expand networks; Improve materials that support programming; Conduct outreach for participant recruitment; Assess results of program offerings; Improve or expand program delivery; and Utilize technology to develop systems of organizational effectiveness. Within your year of service, you will improve the health of California through supporting the capacity of your local coalition and of the greater Opioid Safety Network to reduce the rate of opioid-related deaths.
