Career and Life Goal-Setting For College Students in 2019

It is never too early to start planning out your career! With spring break coming up, it is the perfect time to take out a pen and pad and begin mapping out where you see yourself in the next five to ten years. Career goal-setting may seem daunting, but it can help guide your steps to your authentic health career. What do you want to accomplish in 2019? Is it to take the GRE and get a great score? Land a great summer internship in public policy? Take time to reflect on your journey using the following questions, and check out our webinar on Career Goal setting with myHCN Founder Jeffrey Oxendine!

How Aligned Are You?

How does your passion, values, and goals align with employer needs and opportunities? Does your passion, values, and goals align with what you are good at? These are important questions to consider because having an authentic alignment will help you prepare for opportunities that best fit you. For example, if you are passionate about healthcare but you are good at computer science, you can look into a career in Healthcare Information Technology jobs.

Where Are You Relative to Where You Want to Be?

You should set future goals and action steps around different aspects of your life and career. how are you doing in your relationships? How are you doing in your education or your finances? You will find that there are aspects of your life that you are doing well on and aspects of your life that you can improve. Take the time to write down actionable steps that will get you closer to where you want to be. For example, if you want to be healthier, instead of saying, "I want to lose weight" say " I want to go to the gym 3 times a week."

What is Your Vision and Time-Frame for 2019?

Now that you have reflected on your life and career, it is time to write your vision and set a time frame for your goals in 2019. Where do you see yourself in 10 years? For example, if your goal is to become a doctor and have a family in 10 years, you can start mapping out what you need to accomplish to get to that place such as when you need to take the MCAT or how much money you need to save up. What can you do RIGHT NOW to get your life moving in the right direction?

How Do I Handle Setbacks?

Undoubtedly, you will face doubts and setbacks when pursuing your goals. How do currently handle fears and failures in your life? Do you ignore them or do you face them head on? Do you have mentor or a place of worship you can turn to when face with challenges? A big mistake I used to make is trying to handle things on my own. Identify sources of support and mentor who can lift you up. Health Career Connection was a great source of support in my journey to medical school. Risk will always be involved when going for big dreams, but knowing how to meet challenges will set you apart.
